Bodrum has so much to offer that it can be hard to decide where to go first. With a car rental, you can have the freedom to explore the area properly, and visit places that are a little off the beaten track.

The main draw for holidaymakers is the fantastic waters off of the Bodrum coast. Situated where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean, the calm, clear waters are ideal for swimmers. The seas also play host to a wonderful variety of sea creatures. Scuba diving and snorkelling are recommended, so that you can enjoy the variety of fish, multi-coloured sponges, octopi, crabs and fish. If you don’t fancy going down there yourself, you can also see some of the treasures of the deep at the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

If you can bear to drag yourself away from the coast, you can see two of the most famous archaeological sites in the world; the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis. The city of Ephesus, where the temple can be found, is about 100 miles North of Bodrum, and you can get there in about 2 hours in your rental car. The trip is well worth it. The Mausoleum can be found at Turgutreis Caddesi, where you can also see the impressive Myndos Gate.

It became a popular area especially for the British nationals. Bodrum, known in the ancient times as Halicarnassus which was the capital of Caria, was the birthplace of Herodotus and the site of King Mausolous' Tomb (4th century B.C.), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In the harbor, the Bodrum Castle, or the medieval castle of St. Peter, is a fine example of 15th century crusader architecture, and has been converted into the Museum of Underwater Archeology, with remains dating as far back as the Bronze Age. The stunning panoramic view from Goktepe, nearby, is much photographed by visitors to the Museums' 2nd century theater.

Alternatively, visit the bazaar at Cevat Şakır Caddesi, where you can find everything from delicious Turkish street food, to colourful local pottery, to beautiful handmade jewellery. Window shopping is permitted, although you will almost certainly end up buying something that catches your eye.
